Unknown parameter |url-status= ignored (help) Once the player escapes, the time portal gun is deactivated, and there are three Half-Life headcrabs near the elevator, referencing Half-Life. However, while going to the elevator, the AI tries to crush you in order to destroy your current body and reassemble you at the stasis chamber, it is needed to go to the future using the time portal to avoid that and reach the escape elevator. The other ending is the "escape ending", where if the player can evade getting back into the stasis chamber and goes to the elevator out of the underground test facility. One ending, the "stasis ending" is caused by simply following the AI and returning to her stasis chamber, possibly causing the events of Portal to never happen. On the final moment of the game, endings can diverge: The AI also says that it has no idea why the test chamber is destroyed in the future, and says that the evidence it could collect points that one rogue test subject destroyed the facility (possibly referencing the events of Portal) and that the test chambers were made to train the player in using the time portal, so the player can stop the rogue test subject "dead in her tracks". Later in the game, it is revealed that the player was the only test subject who survived traveling through time, and that the technology used to make the time portals only works in one configuration (from the present to 20 years in the future). The player goes from one puzzle to the next by using a machine which deconstructs their atoms and constructs them again in the next test, this also allows the player to reappear when he/she dies, however, the AI says that i is only possible to reconstruct the body once the present body is destroyed. The player is an unnamed test subject (only referenced as test subject 4509 ) that was awoken from stasis by an unnamed automated AI, and is excepted to complete an special test course of 25 different test chambers evolving an third portal that controls time, which allows you to go to the future, the future versions of the puzzles show degradation and destruction of the test chamber. See also: Portal (video game) § Plot, and Portal 2 § Plot A valid surface is a surface in which regular portals can be placed (usually shown as a white surface). Going through the third time portal conserves your momentum, and you can only place time portals which are intact and valid surfaces in both the present and the future. You can also bring objects from the future into the present such as a cube but if you move the present cube the future cube will go back into the future, you can not however bring objects from the present into the future (As according to the unnamed AI that guides the player, this violates the laws of casualty). Any object you place in the present will be there in the future, a example is if you move an cube and then go into the third time portal you will see an cube on the same position as the past cube. If you go through the third portal you will see the puzzle area in 20 years with vegetation covering the facility.
